Regular traffic updates will be posted on this site and also be provided with signage, radio and newspaper advertising and on the following websites: www.hillsm2.com.au/roadworks.htm and www.livetraffic.com/ Changes on the motorway The breakdown lane has been closed to create safe work areas for construction during the upgrade. Response crews and CCTV provide 24 hour monitoring and assistance.
During construction, traffic will continue to use two lanes during the eastbound morning peak, three lanes during the westbound afternoon peak to west of Beecroft Road and two lanes continuing west along the motorway. The following changes to speed limits have been implemented:
Outside of the weekday peak periods, motorists can expect traffic changes such as temporary lane closures and contra-flows, particularly at night. Signage and barriers will direct drivers around the work areas and will notify drivers of changed traffic conditions before entry to the motorway. Norfolk Tunnel widening work during Australia Day holiday period Road work to widen the citybound Hills M2 Norfolk Tunnel at Epping, will continue on Australia Day when traffic volumes on the motorway are low. Work in the citybound tunnel will be undertaken during the day and night from 8pm Wednesday 25 January to 5am Friday 27 January 2012. Changed traffic conditions Citybound traffic will be diverted to the westbound carriageway under a contra-flow arrangement from 8pm Wednesday 25 January to 5am Friday 27 January 2012. At least one lane will remain open in each direction during this work. All motorway on and off-ramps will be open during these work times. Speed limits will be reduced to 40km/h in the contra-flow area. Please drive carefully and follow the signs. Norfolk Tunnel weekend widening Major road work will be undertaken over a number of weekends to widen the citybound Norfolk Tunnel from 8pm on Saturday 5 November 2011. This essential work will occur on weekends at night from 8pm Saturdays to 5am Mondays until mid-2012.This work is in addition to ongoing weekday nightwork underway since early 2011. During this time citybound traffic will be diverted to the westbound tunnel under a contra-flow arrangement in that tunnel. At least one lane will always remain open in both directions. See below for further details. Access to the motorway will not be available from the on ramps at Herring Road and Lane Cove Road from 10am to 5pm on Sundays. Changed traffic conditions During the work citybound traffic will be diverted to the westbound tunnel under a contra-flow arrangement in that tunnel. At least one lane will always remain open in both directions. Due to the reduction in the number of lanes and reduced road work speed limits delays should be expected at times. Motorists using the motorway during the work period are advised to allow extra time, particularly when travelling westbound on Sundays. Please check www.livetraffic.com or call 132 701 for traffic updates Clearway information for ongoing weekend work in the Norfolk Tunnel To help the flow of traffic during the weekend work in the Norfolk Tunnel, westbound clearways will be in place along sections of alternate routes most Sundays from 6am to 7pm. Westbound clearways will be in place on:

Public transport Bus lane changes at the westbound toll plaza and Beecroft Road exit Changes to the existing westbound bus configurations to improve congestion and traffic flow during the Hills M2 Upgrade were implemented on Monday 29 August 2011. A priority westbound lane for buses has been opened through the main toll plaza during the afternoon weekday peak to help buses avoid congestion. Changes have also been made to the left westbound lane of the Beecroft Road exit that is designated for Beecroft Road traffic only. This will not allow buses to use this lane and then merge into the general motorway lanes near Beecroft Road. Bus lanes and bus stops during constructionPlease note, bus lanes have changed to make way for upgrade work. These changes will ensure some sections of the permanent bus lane can be reinstated ahead of schedule. During this phase of construction a dedicated bus lane will operate:
Outside of these areas buses will use the general traffic lanes during construction. Once the upgrade is complete westbound and eastbound bus lanes will be reinstated between Windsor Road and the Kent Street footbridge. A bus priority (T2) lane will also be established from Terrys Creek to Lane Cove Road. The bus stop located on the northbound carriageway of Windsor Road adjacent to Junction Road, Northmead has been permanently closed. The eastbound bus stop on Talavera Road between Christie Road and Herring Road has been temporarily relocated to Christie Road near the corner of Talavera Road opposite the Macquarie Hospital. Signage is in place to direct pedestrians to the new bus stop. All other bus stops including those on the motorway will remain open during the upgrade work. We apologise for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience. Beecroft Road bus ramp The Beecroft Road bus ramp closed permanently in January 2011. The area is initially being used as a work zone for the Beecroft Road overbridge and will be demolished in early 2012 to allow the motorway to be widened. Bus routes 611 and 740 have been rerouted. Passengers currently using these services should check with Hillsbus or Busways to confirm details of these changes. See www.hillsbus.com.au or www.busways.com.au for more details on bus timetable changes. Further information is also available in the public transport fact sheet on the document links - construction page. Changes to cyclist access An alternative cycle route has been constructed from the Hills District to Macquarie Park and North Ryde. The motorway is closed to cyclists for the duration of construction for safety reasons. The NSW Police will continue their focus on road safety and the enforcement of road safety legislation. Cyclists will be able to access the motorway again after construction. Visit document links - construction to view and download a map of the alternative cycle route. Other changes to pedestrian and cyclist access will be communicated via signage, letterbox drops and the project website. Changes to pedestrian access under Hills M2 viaducts Please note pedestrian access under the Darling Mills Creek, Devlins Creek and Terrys Creek bridges has changed. Access under these bridges will be closed during construction hours to ensure pedestrian safety. Visit document links - construction to view and download notifications regarding closure times and alternative routes Changes on local roads Junction Road, Baulkham Hills Barriers have been installed on the northern side of Junction Road for the new Windsor Road ramp construction area. 'No Stopping' signs have been installed on both sides of Junction Road between Asquith Avenue and Goodin Road as part of this work. This has resulted in the temporary loss of informal street parking along Junction Road. Property access along Junction Road will be maintained at all times. A new footpath with temporary lighting has been constructed to allow pedestrian and cyclist access at the eastern end of Junction Road through to Windsor Road. Please follow the signs when using the new path. Windsor Road Bridge, Baulkham Hills As part of the upgrade, traffic lanes on the Windsor Road Bridge have been temporarily narrowed to accommodate a safe construction area on the western side of the bridge. Pedestrian and cyclist access along Windsor Road will be maintained at all times. Visit document links - construction to view the Windsor Road Bridge notifications and fact sheet. Barclay Road Bridge, Baulkham Hills As part of the upgrade, the northern span of the Barclay Road Bridge will be lengthened in three stages. Work commenced in April and has progressed well. To allow the next stage of construction, the through traffic lanes will be realigned from the eastern side of the bridge to the western side of the bridge on 24 November. Pedestrian and cyclist access will be maintained along the western side of the bridge. Visit document links - construction to view the Barclay Road Bridge start of work notification and fact sheet. Access to the Hills M2 bus stop and the commuter car park will be maintained Bus routes over Barclay Road Bridge will also remain unchanged. Murray Farm Road Bridge, Cheltenham (also known as Kirkham Street) In April 2011, traffic on the Murray Farm Road Bridge was reduced to one lane in alternating directions using signalised traffic control on both sides of the bridge. In late August the through traffic was switched from the western side of the bridge to the eastern side of the bridge. This allows the next stage of construction to commence. This may result in delays during peak periods due to traffic queuing. Pedestrian and cyclist access will be maintained across Murray Farm Road Bridge. Please follow the signs and drive carefully. Beecroft Road Bridge, Beecroft The work zone on the eastbound shoulder lane of the motorway west of Beecroft Road Bridge was moved in September to the centre median to allow widening work to continue. Traffic will be moved closer to the shoulder in coming weeks to provide a safe work area as construction progresses. Somerset Street, Epping Works are continuing on the retaining wall and embankment in this location. Equipment used in this area includes vibration rollers, concrete trucks, and excavators. Local residents will be regularly kept up to date on the progress of works in this area. Christie Road Bridge, Macquarie Park Work on Christie Road Bridge started in February and will be ongoing for the duration of the project. New traffic arrangements were implemented on the bridge in April, and will alternate on either side of the bridge as work progresses. Traffic continues to use one northbound and one southbound lane for the duration of the project. Herring Road on-ramp will be temporarily closed from 8pm Thursday 17 November to 5am Friday 18 November, and from 8pm Friday 18 November to 9am Saturday 19 November for the installation of new bridge beams. Traffic will not be able to enter the motorway at the Herring Road on-ramp during these times. Access to the motorway westbound will be available from the Lane Cove Road on-ramp. Christie Road Bridge, Macquarie Park Work on Christie Road Bridge started in February and will be ongoing for the duration of the project. New traffic arrangements were implemented on the bridge in April, and will alternate on either side of the bridge as work progresses. Traffic will continue to use one northbound and one southbound lane for the duration of the project. There will however be partial closures of one lane northbound. Talavera Road, Macquarie Park Talavera Road will be widened on the northern side to provide two traffic lanes in each direction between Christie Road and Alma Road. There will also be an eastbound bus only right turning lane into Herring Road. The first stage of work started in late June and should be completed by the end of 2011. Pedestrian access on the northern side of Talavera Road is closed between Christie Road and Alma Road. Signage is in place at intersections along Talavera Road diverting pedestrians to the footpath on the southern side of Talavera Road. The eastbound bus stop on Talavera Road between Christie Road and Herring Road was temporarily relocated to Christie Road near the corner of Talavera Road opposite the Macquarie Hospital. Signage is in place to direct pedestrians to the new bus stop Setup of work areasVarious activities are being undertaken to create work areas on the motorway that will help facilitate safe construction of the Hills M2 Upgrade. Temporary pavement work, concrete traffic barrier installation and line marking are ongoing. This work is vital in creating a safe environment for construction workers and motorists. Night worksThe Hills M2 Motorway is an important part of the Sydney Orbital Network. To maintain traffic flow and ensure the safety of road users and construction workers some work must be undertaken after 8pm when traffic volumes are low and lanes can be safely closed.
