What are the objectives of the M2 Upgrade project?

The objectives of the M2 Upgrade project are to:
  • Improve safety.
  • Reduce congestion.
  • Improve travel times in the morning and afternoon peak periods.
  • Provide new bus priority access.
  • Increase access from the motorway to key residential, business and education centres.
What benefits would the M2 Upgrade project deliver to motorway users and the community?

The proposed upgrade would:
  • Reduce congestion during morning and afternoon peak periods.
  • Provide new access points to Sydney's growing residential and business centres.
  • Restore a 100km/h speed limit along the motorway from Lane Cove Road to Beecroft Road.
  • Provide new entry/exit points to create opportunities for additional public transport services and facilities.
  • Increase capacity to accommodate planned future residential and business growth.
What are the next steps?

The project is being assessed under Part 3A of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979. Next steps include:
  • Assessment Report prepared by the Director-General.
  • Minister for Planning decides whether or not to approve the project and the conditions to be attached to any approval.
When would construction start?

If planning approval is granted, construction is scheduled to commence in late 2010.

How long would construction take?

Construction is expected to take around two years.

Who would construct the M2 Upgrade?

The majority of work would be undertaken by Leighton Contractors who have been selected as the preferred contractor.
